Don’t Forget to Change Your A/C Filters!
A well-maintained air conditioning system can last a decade or more, and one of the best ways to keep it maintained is also simplest: change your air filters according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
Think that changing filters that often is excessive? Consider this: when an air filter clogs, it reduces airflow through your ducts and into your home. That means your A/C will need to overwork to provide the same level of comfort as a properly operating system. That overwork can wreak havoc on your home cooling system, leading to:
- Higher energy bills – A clogged filter can add as much as 20 percent to your heating and cooling bills – hundreds of dollars during the course of a year.
- Loss of comfort – Blocked airflow reduces cool air circulation, resulting in less comfort than your systems should deliver.
- Expensive repairs – A dirty filter can cause your air conditioner’s cooling coil to freeze because the unit is overworking to cool your home (low refrigerant can cause this problem, too). A frozen coil is expensive to repair – hundreds of times more expensive than replacing a filter once a month during cooling season.
- System breakdown – Eventually the overwork to your system can get so bad that it wears down parts in your compressor, which could lead to a total – and costly – breakdown.
